Covid-19: My toughest decision as a parent

This week has been one tough decision after another. â €
â €
Three days ago, my husband and I received news that the Australian government announced a travel ban for all noncitizen entering the country. Because of this, one of the largest Australian airlines suspended all international flights in and out of Australia. â €
â €
A few hours later, the US State Department issued a level 4 (highest) travel ban urging all US citizens who are overseas to return home immediately. If not, they should “be prepared to remain abroad for an indefinite period”. ⠀
â €
My heart stopped. I started panic. I couldn’t believe it. This can’t be happening. ⠀
â €
My oldest son, Theo, is currently vacationing in Australia with his grandparents. We sent him off to live with my in-laws for 6 weeks before the start of this whole Coronavirus mess. Never in a million years would we have imagined this Coronavirus would somehow turn into a tragic pandemic. â €
â €
My husband and I argued for hours debating the best course of action for him. Do we risk the exposure of the COVID-19 flying him back to the US or do we practice #socialdistancing and keep him in Australia knowing he may be stuck there for months?â €
â €
This was one of the toughest decisions I had to make as a parent. This motherhood journey for me is still in its infancy stage. Half the time I feel like I don’t know what the hell I’m doing. But right now, all I know is I want my son close and I want him safe. ⠀
â €
After 24 hours of constant debate, we decided to accept all risks and bring Theo back. Yesterday, my husband drove 4 hours to Los Angeles and flew 15 hours to Melbourne to pick him up. â €
â €
In about an hour, they should land in Los Angeles and start their journey back to Las Vegas. â €
â €
In the meantime, I’ll be here reading every single journal article ever written about COVID-19 in children because I firmly believe knowledge is power. The only way for me to get through this is to educate myself and understand what I’m dealing with. ⠀
